Reading List

I have tried for years to read this book and it finally happened. My hopes were too high and I got the plot confused with "The World According to Garp" -- I was way off. But as much as I didn't LOVE this book, I soon realized that the parts that I underlined were deeply moving and well written, revealing how well the novel oscillates between extreme tragedy and unwavering hope:

"The heaviest of burdens is therefore simultaneously an image of life’s most intense fulfillment."

"A single metaphor can give birth to love."

"The crew of her soul rushed up to the deck of her body."

"It was as though she had found refuge inside a shell and the only sound she could hear was the sea of an inimical world."

"There was not a scrap of tangible evidence to show that he had spent the most wonderful years of his life with her."

Jack McFadden-Talbot at the LA Phil

I'm so proud to announce that my cousin's piece will be performed by the LA Phil this week. The Composer Fellowship program that he was selected to be in asked him to create a piece inspired by his surroundings at Disney Hall. His composition, "Urban Sea," takes you inside his creative interpretation of the space. He says, "I envisioned the hall as a turbulent metallic ocean swallowing up a warm wooden ship."

Artistic Inspiration -- Asger Jorn

From the looks of it, I would have enjoyed spending time with Danish painter Asger Jorn. Not only is he dubbed as one of the "greatest painters of the 1950's," but he also had an interesting and prolific writing career. For instance, he muses, "A creative train of thought is set off by: the unexpected, the unknown, the accidental, the absurd, the impossible."

Come FEAST with us! This Saturday 2/21

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 5-8pm

From feastinbklyn.org: You may have heard about our new initiative Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics (FEAST), a multi-disciplinary, community-based artist grant. We are pleased to announce the first Feast. So far, our proposals include performance, video, fashion design, and public installation.

The dinner is being crafted by the folks from oneandsupp.blogspot.com and Oh Liza Jane will be playing jams during the meal.

At each FEAST, participants will pay a sliding-scale entrance fee for which they will receive supper and a ballot. Diners will vote on a variety of proposed artist projects. At the end of dinner, the artist whose proposal receives the most votes will be awarded funds collected through the entrance fee to produce the project. The work will then be presented during the next FEAST.
