Artistic Inspiration -- Asger Jorn

From the looks of it, I would have enjoyed spending time with Danish painter Asger Jorn. Not only is he dubbed as one of the "greatest painters of the 1950's," but he also had an interesting and prolific writing career. For instance, he muses, "A creative train of thought is set off by: the unexpected, the unknown, the accidental, the absurd, the impossible."

Come FEAST with us! This Saturday 2/21

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 5-8pm

From feastinbklyn.org: You may have heard about our new initiative Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics (FEAST), a multi-disciplinary, community-based artist grant. We are pleased to announce the first Feast. So far, our proposals include performance, video, fashion design, and public installation.

The dinner is being crafted by the folks from oneandsupp.blogspot.com and Oh Liza Jane will be playing jams during the meal.

At each FEAST, participants will pay a sliding-scale entrance fee for which they will receive supper and a ballot. Diners will vote on a variety of proposed artist projects. At the end of dinner, the artist whose proposal receives the most votes will be awarded funds collected through the entrance fee to produce the project. The work will then be presented during the next FEAST.

When art and animals combine, I lose my mind. Such is the case with this recent sculpture by French artist, Corda. The light-weight aluminum material counter balances with the heavy subject matter and the result captivates and excites!

Ann Hamilton at the Guggenheim

Ann Hamilton's site-specific piece, "Human Carriage," whirls around the curved walls of the Guggenheim Museum and is truly mystifying. I hardly even noticed their current show, "The Third Mind" because I was too busy following Hamilton's sculpture around in circles, waiting to hear the bells ring!

From the LA Times: "Throughout the day, a set of Tibetan hand cymbals, suspended in a carriage of silk cloth, will travel down a pipe hung from the curved balustrade -- creating a ringing heard throughout the museum. When they reach the lobby, a 'reader' at an upper level will load a stack of books -- cut guillotine style and glued and tied together in bundles -- onto a vertical pulley, which lifts the bells back to the top of the ramp. The work is an expression of the often invisible process of cultural transmission and knowledge. 'You never know how a sound dissipates,' Hamilton says, 'when it arrives and where it is carried.'"

This New York-based artist comes at us with wild, scattered gestures that sweep our eyes into layered circles. Only upon closer investigation can one make out the wonderfully confusing sweeps into figural forms.

Art Review -- Calder's "The Paris Years"

From the elaborate use of eclectic materials to the quirky film direction, Calder won me over in this bizarre peek into his early Paris years. (Note: I am a sucker for wire sculpture). The remarkable craftsmanship took backseat to the creative output achieved in his characters. And seeing the exhibit with Ruby, a wide-eyed one year-old friend, accentuated the excitement the work demands!
