Image Inspiration -- Quilt Magic

"KALEIDOSCOPIC XXXIII: SHARDS"

While most of the quilts in Paula Nadelstern's show at the American Folk Art Museum are a little too mystical for me, this piece stood out as an outstanding exception. What a masterpiece! Check out more of her work here

Sweet Gloria -- Pet Post

This otter looks like a cat, dog and bunny all rolled into one. It appears as though someone is about to get a retaliation snow ball in the face... but what a dream regardless!!

Cat in the Box!!

Bringing in the New -- Art Review

The New Museum's current show invigorates and confuses just the right amount to balance a thought-provoking and aesthetically exciting exhibit: "The Generational: Younger Than Jesus." 50 artists from 25 countries lend their artistic flare into a whirlwind ensemble. All under the age of 33, the museum hopes to illustrate art's young, fresh and new perspective on what we call "Contemporary." Visit the museum here

Jerry Saltz reviews: "'Younger Than Jesus' indicates that the alchemical essence known as the sublime, the primal buzz of it all, is no longer in God or nature or abstraction. These young artists show us that the sublime has moved into us, that we are the sublime; life, not art, has become so real that it’s almost unreal. Art is being reanimated by a sense of necessity, free of ideology or the compulsion to illustrate theory. Art is breaking free." via NY Magazine

From Artnet.com: "In the 1960s, Zürn experimented with the Surrealist 'automatic' drawing technique and delved into the depths of hidden meanings that she found in cryptic anagrams and coincidental correspondences."

Image Inspiration (continuted...)

Yesterday's post caused quite a stir. Mainly, the victorious expression on Cleveland State head coach Gary Waters' face. I would like to tell you that (after some further research) I have determined that this guy isn't afraid of making some incredible faces. So to you, Mr. Waters, my hat goes off: Congrats on a great tourney and keep those emotions flowing!!

An African Mermaid -- Image Inspiration

A statue from the Ovimbundu of Angola, circa 1950s-1960s.

This figure makes me want to:

1. Swim. Anywhere. This instant.
2. Take an African sculpting course (in Africa, obvi)
3. Get the song, "Under the Sea," sung by a cartoon lobster, out of my head.

From the NYTimes:

"Mami Wata... is Mother Water, Mother of Fishes, with sources in West and Central Africa and tributaries throughout the African Americas from Bahia to Brooklyn. Usually shown as a half-woman, half-fish, she slips with ease between incompatible elements: water and air, tradition and modernity, this life and the next."

Dana Schutz -- AOD

"One Eyed Girl," 2005

This woodcut illuminates my sorted feelings and confusion about Spring. I want to see the sunshine, but it's simply not there...maybe it's just lurking behind me?

Howardena Pindell -- AOD

"Untitled (#35)," 2004

"Untitled (#7)," 1973

Today's artist was chosen from a textural explosion! Each piece makes me want to dive in and explore the jagged terrain. These two in particular exemplify the bizarre seasonal transformation that the East Coast is experiencing right now...
