That being said...I will be at the game tonight rain or shine (games are usually played outside at the park using dim street lights from across the street.) I will be the adult in stands (who has an elementary school teaching credential) heckling the poor youths on the opposing team.

a couple of thoughts:

1)To coach, is to be reminded how much you love the game, and how much the kids may not. But it is also to save the game, in a way preserve the game. To coach is remembering how hard you used to work when you played and how listening to your coach was vital to your success and the success of the team. The toughest task in coaching is convincing your guys how important all of "this" really is. Its the intrinsic nature of things you want to pass on to them, working hard because THEY actually want to get better. NOT just working hard, out of fear they may be yelled at.

2)Coaching is teaching and Ive found that coaches who yell and scream are actually yelling and screaming at themselves. They become mad that their players havent been taught how to do something, and because the coach can't teach, he or she yells (so it appears they are coaching) lol!...

-that being said I had a great football coach once say, "dont get down when I push you hard, get down when I stop pushing you hard, because then you'll know I dont give a shit anymore."

I have a poster in my classroom that reads: "there's a difference between...talking and teaching / listening and learning". I think it means you have to do your best as a teacher, but that is only half of the equation, the student must also be held responsible for their learning. convincing fifth graders that understanding the causes of the boston tea party is important is easy once they are convinced that "learning" in general is important no matter what the academic subject is.

The only muscle you cant workout in the gym, ...is heart. You have to show and always give your best. I hope tonight I see will's players playing as hard as I know he'll be coaching!

good luck tonight ROOMATE!
I'll be there front and f@ckin' center!"coach-E"https://www.blogger.com/profile/17124889820156873008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784672351869930965.post-90735931580712081312010-02-12T12:40:49.832-05:002010-02-12T12:40:49.832-05:00tune in next time! I can imagine it working in a debate-team kind of setting, devil's advocate style, but besides that, it would take some real creativity to apply in academia land. Not impossible, I bet.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06640249283342895284noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784672351869930965.post-2829813012077358842010-02-11T13:42:42.235-05:002010-02-11T13:42:42.235-05:00so what had happened? how did you leave "it&q...so what had happened? how did you leave "it" on the floor? cliff hangers are the worst!

i like this best friend idea when it comes to teams...wonder if i can make it work on the battle grounds of academia land when it seems quite the opposite prevails.

keoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
