LA Art Show 2009

I always have to get one of me by a yellow piece...I'll be posting some of my favorite works from the fair soon, but these pics were too fun and sentimental that I had to share!

"Mistakes Were Made," 2008

This photographic abstraction by Sean Higgins was similar to the view from my overnight plane flight back to the stormy east. Having returned, I have decided that I need to find hope in the cloudy horizon.

I miss my brother and In N' Out burgers...

More pics from the LA Art Show to come soon!

Peter Doig and Chris Ofili -- AOD

"Untitled," 2000, oil on canvas

"Chris Ofili and Peter Doig have lived and worked since the early 2000s on the Southern Caribbean island of Trinidad" via BOMB Magazine. This painting makes me want to soak up some sun and get a clever yellow coat. More of Doig's recent pieces at Gavin Brown here. Thanks to Sam for the hot tip!

"Pot Pouri" 2008

On this glorious Obama day, I see this art as a representation of our economic forecast...messy, yellow and hopeful. Hope you're having a ball!

This photograph jumps out as a highlight in a fabulous book, "Our Future," from the Ullens Collection in Beijing. Check out their Center for Contemporary Art here

I found this on my camera today, taken a year ago at a Heather & the Barbarians show. Bowen and his friend Anna had the exact same silver ring I had. Pretty rad. Hopefully it inspires you to check out H & the B's January residency on Thursday's at 9pm down at Pete's Candy Store. You never know what two other people might have in common with you...

Nick Cave -- AOD

Nick Cave (not the singer) creates elaborate costumes that remind me of an exuberant New Orleans, Africa, and bizarre installation pieces. From Jack Shainman Gallery: "Constructed from found and recycled objects, thrift-store purchases, and hand-fabricated elements and comprised of materials such as vintage masks, beads, plastic flowers, cloth, and sticks that are intuitively combined to form complex and highly seductive visual surfaces. Reminiscent of African ceremonial costumes, yet similarly connected to haute couture, Cave’s Soundsuits are physical manifestations of his energy. He has said, ‘I believe that the familiar must move towards the fantastic. I want to evoke feelings that are unnamed, that aren’t realized except in dreams.’" More here
