Feminist Bang
PS1's current show, "Wack! Art & the Feminist Revolution," is an overwhelming celebration of the female body, mind, and more body. Usually feminist video art puts me to sleep, but fortunately, there was enough work on the walls to keep me interested. Some stand-out hits were by Faith Wilding and Lynn Hershman (above).

Cai Guo-Qiang at the Guggenheim
The exhibit reads like a well written book report. Perfectly summarized, well phrased, and even the eloquent prose ignites the space. The only problem was it seemed too precise -- too rehearsed and "unplanned." Calculating and negotiating the spacial relationships between art and limited museum space must have been a colossal undertaking; one that I can appreciate. While the end result leaves an air of exact perfection, the show simultaneously leaves the hope for something more profound to be discovered.

Francis Alÿs
Still from "Rehearsal 1," 1999-2004
Belgian-born, Mexico City–based artist Francis Alÿs left a mark on my mind at his recent Hammer exhibit, "Politics of Rehearsal." For someone with little patience and a warning alarm for video art, I was impressed that watching the act of "preparing for something" enthralled me. The work's building anticipation imprinted its way into my brain as a curious question mark and yet the artist's explanations resolved them with a poetic touch.

Mass MoCA & China - two of my favorite places
Edward Burtynsky, "Urban Renewal #6," 2004
Mass MoCA's current exhibition of western artists in China, documenting and responding to the country's wildly expedited expansion, unexpectedly blossomed into one of the best shows of the season. Unfortunately, when I inquired about a catalogue or brochure for the exhibit, I was told,"they're thinking about working on it."

I'm back.
Searching through yellow amber online, I came across this extraordinary piece that has not only Hymenoptera and Formicidae, but a large winged termite! More at Ambericawest.com
